Joan's nomination story

Joan is a Nurse who looks after the physical and mental health of Refugee and Asylum Seeker Families and welcomes them to Sheffield.I am a huge advocate for healthy lifestyles and involvement for all with sporting activity. I am an ordinary mum who encouraged my daughters to join in all sorts of sports. I helped to run a girls football club which eventually twinned with a girls club in Ghana. I have worked in the NHS for 42 years. For much of that time I have worked with those often excluded from brilliant events like the Olympics. This includes homeless families (the forgotten homeless) and asylum seekers (many of whom have gone on to be great role models for young people ). Many of these people will know and recognize me as I carry the torch through the streets of South Yorkshire. It will enable them to dream the dream and feel part of the Olympic action.
