'Like Mother Like Daughter' I wish to nominate my 14 year old daughter Jess as an Olympic Torchbearer through Alnwick next year. Back in 1984 as a talented 13 year old sportsperson I proudly carried the Olympic Torch through the streets of Alnwick on its way to Los Angeles. My daughter shares my sporting enthusiasm and amongst many recent accomplishments excelled herself by representing Northumberland at the ESAA Cross Country Championships in Nottingham early this year (and last year in Manchester). In May she was a key member of Alnwick's Duchess High School Cross Country team which reached an outstanding 14th place Nationally out of 1400 schools and is also due shortly to represent Northumberland at Pentathlon. As a keen fundraiser and Captain of Longhoughon Rangers Under 14 Girl's Football Team, (Top Goal Scorer this season with 46 goals) she has been chosen to present a cheque later this month, for the funds raised, to Lady Elsie Robson and Alan Shearer towards the Bobby Robson Cancer Charity. As a natural team player Jess is soon to commence a coaching and refereeing course so that she can give something back and strengthen the Club by helping its younger members. For her to literally, 'follow in my footsteps' would be wonderful for me and give her a lasting sense of pride and achievement - I should know!!
