I have known 'Jay' Acharya some eleven years now and he has proven not just to me but all he seems to come in contact with an inspiration in determination and self sacrifice. Despite a quadruple heart bypass, several operations on his eyes and type two diabetes he works tirelessly for the blind in the community. Nearly blind himself, he, at the tender age of 71 runs the Walthamstow Asian blind association in both word and deed. He organizes weekly meetings, fund raising and community liason. As an Indian born resident he strives to intergrate all sides of the cultural base that is east London. A keen cricketer in his youth, he sings and performs to raise funds and awareness. Medically retired since 1979 he has, since then, been out in all weathers and times with his heavy satchal and walking stick. Should he be selected I would suggest his daughter Rita, act as his guide otherwise the flame could end up back in Bejing before someone says stop, such is his natural determination..The Waltham forest Asian Blind Association recently became simply the Waltham forest Blind Association.Whilst, due to recent cuts it has had it's funding withdrawn, he continues to raise monies, organise trips, and play a lead role as chairman.
