Janet Smith's nomination story

Over the last 12 years, Janet has tirelessly spearheaded the evolution of SASC - Stornoway Amateur Swimming Club. Increasing membership to over 50 childen, the club is now one of the most popular young peoples sports clubs. Not only does has Janet expanded to personally cater for the developing swimming wishing to gain membership, for the first time in the club's 37 year history we now have 2 swimmers competing at a national schools level, one of which is also competing internationally at the World Island Games. Janet has dedicated over 3000 voluntary hours to the swimming club - and that is just hours spent pool-side! So much more time goes into the behind-the-scenes running of the club, and especially the annual galas that we have developed with other clubs and islands in the Scottish Highlands. As with so much voluntary work, it is done for the love of the sport and the desire to make it accessible to every child across the island. Being an Olympic Torch Bearer would be a perfect opportunity to both honour and reward not only Janet Smith for all her hard work, dedication and teaching, but every member of the Stornoway Amateur Swimming Club for their dedication and enthusiasm over the years by having a representative take part in this most special of relays.
