Jane's nomination story

As a committed charity worker, Jane devotes much of her time and energy to the community. As Captain of the "1st Dagenham Girls Brigade Company", Jane provides a safe environment for young people to make friends, have fun and gain awards. Jane joined Girls Brigade when she was 7 and has gone through the ranks to become Captain. She works with local youngsters twice a week - all year round and at weekend camps, encouraging and inspiring them to achieve their potential. Jane also plays an active role in "YOU London" encouraging youngsters and volunteers to get involved in youth organisations. Jane is also Secretary of APPLE (Association of Prostrate Patients in London and Essex - registered charity number 1086824) which aims to raise awareness about Prostate Cancer. Jane became involved in APPLE in 2002 after her father died from cancer. Her experiences from that life changing event lead her to want to help raise awareness about the disease and help others affected by it. Jane arranges monthly support group meetings, creates newsletters, manages the website, responds to enquiries and organises awareness/fundraising events. Since 2003, Jane has helped raise over £20,000 for charity, achieved by running the London Marathon twice and organizing/participating in numerous other events. Jane's tireless charitable efforts make a real difference across the community and I think Jane will be a worthy Torchbearer for the 2012 Olympic Games.
