There are many people like me who give a small amount to lots of different causes. I appreciate that there are also people who dedicate themselves to one big cause and this is much more visible yet I believe it is just as important to have a mix of people.
I have a relatively senior role in the bank and in the last year I have added the mammoth tasks of organising my daughter's wedding and coming to terms with my husbands early retirement from the bank on top of my commitments. A lot has changed for me in the last year personally as well as professionally and it would have been so easy to back off from everything and leave it to somebody else. In the last year my work has demanded much more of my time due to integration and staff changes yet I have not eased up on my community involvement to compensate. Free time has been none existent.
A number of teachers I know have been asking me about the Games now that I am employed by Lloyds. Most are having Olympic themed projects in summer term 2012 so I am being asked about getting hold of a torch to show round. If I were to get a place in the relay my capacity to spread the word would be huge across schools and clubs. I would book holiday time off to take that torch around to as many people as possible.
