Irene's nomination story

Irene's not only surpassed her personal best, she's smashed it! December 2010, following complete lung failure, there seemed little hope of her surviving to the New Year. Prepared for the worst, her family were astounded when Harefield hospital advised that a compatible donor had been found enabling Irene to have a double lung transplant. Something they thought would never happen. New Year's Eve Irene underwent the transplant and here began her real fight for survival. Over the following months, Irene battled for her life and to regain the fitness she once had. Today she is back working at BT every bit the fit and active woman she was before illness dominated her life. She has inspired and humbled everyone lucky enough to know her and is a beacon of hope, strength and inspiration to anyone facing life's difficulties and adversities. Irene is a truly worthy candidate to carry the Olympic Torch.
