Ian's nomination story

Following an apprenticeship at Aberdeen FC, Ian became Youth Coach at Scarborough, where he was involved at grass roots level, leading Football in the Community. Following a further coaching position at Hartlepool, he became Director of Youth at York, attaining UEFA "A" Qualified Coach status. He has inspired many youngsters to go on to playing or coaching careers. Ian's career was suspended when he suffered from a heart attack, and was then diagnosed with a brain tumour. Due to its position, only 80% of the tumour could be removed in open surgery, with radiotherapy to follow. Side-effects of the treatment left him unable to speak, and with one side of his face dropping. Ian has battled back to fitness and got his speech back to normal, and is now a Coach Educator with the elite youth in 9 clubs. Being a torchbearer would motivate him to improve his fitness
