Heather's nomination story

Heather has been an active member of St John Ambulance for 8 years and has developed her skill levels from First Aider to Emergency Transport Attendant and crewing an ambulance. Heather is also Divisional Officer of her local unit which has 28 members of all skills levels and as such liaises with local event organisers and St John members to ensure the correct level of medical cover is provided to help the event run smoothly. Over the course of a calendar year Heather gives up in excess of 500 hours of her time to St John whether it be carrying out risk assessments for upcoming local events to establish the level of medical cover recommended, running weekly training meetings for members to ensure their skills levels are kept up to date or attending events as part of the cover agreed. Heather also helps cover holiday/absence in the patient transport team at a local children's A&E department transporting children by ambulance to the designated hospital. During 2011 Heather has project managed the refurbishment of her division's head quarters and by using her local knowledge and contacts has saved the organisation in the region of £10k compared to quotes that had been provided by larger building contractors.
