Gisela Stomberg

The tireless should be rewarded! The fairy godmother of VfR Heisfelde [Heisfelde Field Sports' Association] is Gisela Stomberg (56). She has already served the football section of the association with true dedication for half her life. As a canteen attendant in the clubhouse, she became caretaker of the first men's team at VfR Heisfelde in 1991 - a post that she still holds today. "Gila", as she is known at the association, is not just responsible for the players - she's also a surrogate mother to some of them. When Gordinne Marechal Ngapy from Congo joined VfR Heisfelde at the tender age of 18, he lived with the Stombergs for two years. "He is such a lovely person and we're still in touch today. He now lives in Liège." Separations from players and trainers are often a painful experience for Gisela. As a caretaker at the club, she did not merely do her job - she helped out on all fronts. When it was customary for each of the sports associations represented to provide a linesman, Gisela Stomberg gladly stepped in to hold the flag. She also regularly coached the players in her car on their way to away matches. And it was also a common occurrence to see her working at the stadium ticket office. She takes care of the team's kits, and organises the referees and match reports. She's always there for young players, with plenty of advice and an open ear.
