Gerard's nomination story

Gerard suffers from Usher Syndrome Type 2 which is Retinitis Pigmentosa with deafness. He struggles with it daily but despite it he lives life to the full. He is a Chartered Quantity Surveyor, married with 5 children. Aside from work and family Gerard has a great love for Gaelic football and the community spirit it invokes in his rural area. As Youth Officer he is responsible for all underage football. Four years ago his club had only a handful of juveniles but due to his dedication and commitment now has over 60, 4-12 year olds, playing football. As a GAA certified coach and regardless of his disability, Gerard devotes practically all his spare time to coaching, training and managing his young teams, making sure each child is encouraged and praised, developing their skills and promoting a great community spirit. As PRO Gerard writes match reports and club notes for local papers and runs the club website, all contributing to developing and maintaining community involvement. He is an inspirational person.
