Gerald's nomination story

Gerald is my Dad and I am nominating him for his dedication and loyalty to sport, in particular football, in Staffordshire. He has been involved in local football for 54 years, during which time he has run youth teams, an adult team for 20 years and has been a football referee for 51 years, 12 years of which he was Chairman of Rugeley Referees Association. Even at the age of 73, he can still be seen on Sundays and mid-week when needed, refereeing boys games and he has no plans to finish yet! His passion for sport has also been demonstrated in other fields, such as playing table tennis several years ago in Rugeley and District Table Tennis league and being sponsored to run in the London Marathon in 1988 in order to purchase equipment for local Physiotherapists. His loyalty has been demonstrated in areas outside of sport too, in working at Rugeley Power Station for 48 years to date and donating blood, for the benefit of others on at least 75 occasions. My Dad was recognised locally when in 1974, Cannock Chase District awarded him a Sporting Personality award and it would make mine, his and our whole family's day, if he were recognised now by being chosen to be a Olympic Torchbearer.
