Gemma's nomination story

Gemma works for 3 days a week at a charity working with people who are mentally ill, among some of the most vulnerable in our society, but she hasn't rested on her spare days and has used her two other days a week to volunteer first at a local charity working with adults and families with alcohol and drug problems for six months and then at a community-based school for disabled children for three months. In 2009, she ran the 5K Cancer Research Race for Life, raising £400. In 2010, Gemma spent three months volunteering at Akany Avoko, a children's home in Madagascar. Since then, Gemma has worked tirelessly to raise money for Akany Avoko, spending many weekends, come rain or shine, running a charity stall selling crafts from Madagascar, sending every penny back to the orphanage. Gemma already has a place on a Social Work degree course at Bath University. Gemma is focussed on helping those
