I am proud to nominate my 76 year old Mum, Clare Illing. Clare has been at the centre of Etwall community life for 50 years, dedicatedly supporting many local clubs and fund raising projects. Being a Home Economics teacher, she used her love of food to reach & inspire many failing children, who went on to careers in catering. As a member of the Women's Institute, Clare set up a local Produce Guild promoting healthy cooking & eating. In 1970 Etwall Primary School wanted to build a swimming pool. The Derbyshire tradition of Well Dressing was introduced to the community as a fund raiser, with Clare being instrumental in its success. Clare continued to promote Well Dressings in Derbyshire with a slide show, with donations going to charity. Clare is one of life's unsung heroes who does all this for no personal gain. Her only reward is seeing the joy her help brings to other people. In retirement she has had many medical hurdles to clear; mitral heart valve repair, 2 hip replacements, stroke & liver transplant (following a viral infection). Clare has even managed to turn these setbacks into something positive & actively gets involved in local patient support groups. Medication has restricted Clare's mobility & slowed her down but her flame burns bright. She is an inspiration to all she meets, but especially to her family and friends. It would be a fitting tribute if she was privileged to be selected as an Olympic Torch Bearer and carry the flame.
