Esa-Pekka Salonen

Conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen has been Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Philharmonia Orchestra since 2008. Salonen's work has consistently focused on collaboration, artistic excellence and rich learning opportunities, rediscovering and reinvigorating the music of the past for our times. Esa-Pekka believes passionately that classical music has something to offer everyone and is committed to finding innovative ways to open up the Orchestra's work to a wider audience, for audiences in London, the UK, and across the globe, exporting the best in British music making. Esa-Pekka's RE-RITE: Be the Orchestra, a digital 'virtual Philharmonia Orchestra', did just that - a free immersive video and projection installation that used the dramatic music of Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring and the latest interactive technologies to reveal the inner workings of each orchestral section. RE-RITE allowed members of the public to conduct, play and step inside the Orchestra.
