Emma's nomination story

I have run a voluntary organisation called 'Shine Cancer Support' for over three years. I set up this organisation following my own diagnosis and treatment for Breast Cancer in 2006. Shine is aimed at younger adults with any type of cancer. I have developed this over the last three years to the situation now, where we have nearly 100 members and I have formed a volunteer group to develop our services further and we will shortly become a registered charity.

Healthcare professionals regularly refer patients to us which shows that we have been accepted as a professional support solution which is trusted.

I climbed Mount Snowdon and raised over £300 for Shine. I organised an anniversary party for Shine in Oct 2010 and raised just over £1000. I helped another Shine member organise a pamper day which raised just over £1000. Relay for Life- Having taken part in Ferndown Relay for Life in 2010, I volunteered as the committee member with responsibility for survivors in the 2011 event. I organised over 60 cancer survivors to attend this 24 hour walking event in aid of Cancer Research UK and participate in the opening lap of honour. We raised £30,000.

I also volunteer with other organisations, such as Macmillan, Breakthrough Breast Cancer and The Dorset Cancer Network Partnership Panel (NHS) I regularly speak at events on behalf of these organisations and take part in project work for them.
