Ann's nomination story

Eleanor is Deafblind and was born without speech. In the 1950s children like Eleanor were sent away from their parents and at just age 4 she wen to the School for the Deaf in Llandridod Wells. She went on to work in a local factory in St Davids for 31 years, assembling switches for kettles. On leaving employment Eleanor threw herself into her hobbies. These include horse riding (she has competed at Stoneleigh dressage RDA), art, computers, photography and attending Pembrokeshire College. Eleanor is a regular and active member of Pembrokeshire Deaf Club and Braille Classes run by Pembrokeshire County Council. Today she enjoys travelling to many different events including Horse of the Year, Olympia, and National cross country events. Eleanor is a positive role model to her community overcoming the barriers of her Deafblindness. She demonstrates courage of spirit which is infectious to everyone who meets her. She faces adversity with a sense of humour and a smile.
