Eddie Birchall

I wish to nominate Eddie Birchall, voluntary youth worker and boxing coach from Newbury Community Centre in Farnworth, Bolton. He is an excellent role model for the young people on our estate. Last year he successfully completed the Ironman Triathlon to show young people you can achieve anything if you work for it. He works full time but gives most of his leisure time to running the youth club and boxing club at Newbury. Each year he organises a summer challenge for the young people. Last year they walked to Blackpool and back then cycled to the Humber Bridge and back raising £2000 for Alzheimers Society. Eddie has worked as a volunteer at the centre for the past 20 years and is well respected by old and young alike. In 2009 he was nominated for and won the Mayor of Bolton's Unsung Hero Award. He really wants the honour of carrying the Olympic Torch.
