Don's nomination story

Don has raised over £50K for our local hospice (Teesside) since 1998, fundraising in many different ways, but mostly through organizing + chairing pub quizzes. He is well known in the area for his achievements and well supported by the local paper and now compiles a popular weekly quiz for them free of charge on local interest to promote his charity quiz. In 1995 Don was instrumental in launching a local lottery to raise funds for the hospice + is still much involved as a collector, when collectors were scarce he has worked in excess of 50 hrs a week ensuring the funds were in. Don also understands the value of each person he collects from and takes the time to chat with them even at times getting involved in helping out some less able members on his way round with difficulties, changing bulbs, finding stuff etc ,they know and trust him. As you can imagine all this walking the streets keeps him very fit, when he did have a short illness a few years ago he was overwhelmed by the concern and support sent by the quiz goers + the members as Don always turns up. In 2008 Don was honored with a charity volunteer award through the paper, many people sent in testimonials praising his dedication and has also been awarded long service and achievement awards from the hospice. He has applied to be a volunteer at the Olympics and is very exited about it,he loves all sport and is a supporter at local and national level. He is also the local Santa! 1 little girl said, he is the real 1
