Since leaving the armed forces in 1993, Derek has been heavily involved in numerous Youth Work projects in Govan. He was the coordinator for one of the first youth organisations in the area that brought local young people from rival gangs together to address the significant levels of territorialism in Govan. A friendly, compassionate and humble family man, Derek is appreciated by generations of families in Govan. He now works as a Youth Employability Advisor helping 16-19 year olds secure work, training or apprenticeship opportunities. Even now, he still finds donates time to the young people of Govan by supporting the 'Twilight Basketball', aimed at keeping young people engaged in positive activities on Friday nights. By delivering a passionate approach to his work, he has been able to empower young people to feel confident and capable of achieving their full potential.
