Derek's passion is working to create new opportunities which transform deprived neighbourhoods and he has committed himself body and soul to this over 15 years in London and the south east. Most recently he managed the Margate Renewal Partnership, turning Margate from a failing seaside town into one of the UK's top creative hot spots. Most importantly he linked the community into the work on what could have been an elite new art gallery and helped many small businesses to be part of the restoration of the Old Town and the creation of a vibrant Harbour Arm and new Turner Contemporary Gallery, all now nominated for two prestigious regeneration awards. Derek has also campaigned to gain support for seaside towns across the country seeking new futures and taken on a national leadership role. Locally Derek helped to develop the Margate Jazz festival into one of the UK's premier Jazz events. Derek is also a volunteer for SUSTRANS the national cycle campaign and gives his time to local schools encouraging youngsters to cycle safe get out on their bikes. Derek is a keen runner and triathlete and competes in several half marathons and triathlons every year. He wins Triple Gold for me - helping businesses, his local community and driving his own fitness too.
