Carrying the Flame on
David's nomination story

Dai aged 67 has been Volunteer Lifeguard for over 30 yrs for Penybont Lifeguards. Made numerous rescues over the years & raised thousands of £s for Charity doing Xmas Morning Swim for over 20 yrs. During 2009-10 Dais health & fitness was at its lowest, dogged with sports injuries & asthma, Dai was then diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in November 2010. This life changing shock encouraged Dai to re-evaluate his lifestyle and future. He changed his diet completely with the aim to lower his sugar intake and improve his health, he also took up extra swim sessions to improve fitness . His commitment as such resulted in almost 2 stone weight loss & with his love of swimming he now manages to swim 4xwkly sessions with local triathletes & lifeguards. In July 2011 aged 67 Dai WON the Porthcawl Round the Bay Swim-short course - even beating under 35 age group. He also completed a local charity walk which he couldnt do in full in 2010 as his leg was so bad. Dai now aims to compete in an Open Water National swim event in Swansea in August which Olympic stars such as Rebecca Adlington & David Davies are entering! Dai will live his dream to swim alongside such stars! To carry the Olympic flame would also be a dream come true & hopefully make Dai realise how well respected and admired he is & give him something back for all that he has given over the yrs as our lifeguard. Hes a true inspiration to all of us even more so to those diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
