David is a inspiration to his services to Athletics,he was a long distance runner with sheer determination. After becoming ill with ME he freely devoted many hours to coaching and advising other athletes. David's athletic career began at age 13,when he won the Westmorland School Championships,losing both his parents at a young age made him want to become successfull, so he dedicated selflessly his life to athletics. He ran 25 marathons, competed at the European Championships,became the fastest Britain in 1980 (clocked 2:11:35sec) at the world championships.He was British Marathon Champion in 1977,first winner of the Cumbrian Run 1982,he became British Fell Running Champion on 3 Occasions in 1970's. Won the Ben Nevis Fell Race 5 times,he set the record in 1976 (1:26:55) and it stood for 9 years.Represented Britain in cross country,road running and track running, was appointed National Coach developing Junior Road Running by British Athletics Federation.He particapted in local Charity events,he ran 30 miles to raise money for the Cumbria Cancer Scanner which was the first ever scanner in the county of Cumbria.He helped raised money to build Appleby a new Guide hut. David received Freedom of the Borough of Appleby-In-Westmorland,and also won Cumbrian Sports Personality.He has spent many hours freely giving talks to local groups and opened school events.David put Cumbria on the map for Athletics, he is a inspiration to his community, family, friends and a ambassador for Britain.
