David's nomination story

David is an inspiration to people facing disability. He is losing his sight as a result of retinitis pigmentosa. He is a successful journalist and was a keen motorcyclist writing for Superbike Magazine until he lost his driving license when his sight deteriorated to the point where he did not meet the DVLA criteria. Though devastated, David took his energy and enthusiasm and refocused it from motorcycling to running, and has not looked back. Last year this culminated in his running a personal best in the London Marathon (raising funds for RP research) is a fantastic 2h38m. He has also organised running events in his own area to raise funds for RP Fighting Blindness and raised thousands of pounds. He continues to write and study. If everyone faced with such dramatic threats to their way of life responded so positively and with such a zest for life, the world would be a far better place. I know David would be proud to bear the torch - he would no doubt write well about it too! Visually impaired and blind people would be proud to be represented by him as a torchbearer. I have little doubt that others will nominate him too. David Head Chief Executive RP Fighting Blindness
