David Backhouse

David has been a Governor at Mayfield School for twenty four years and Chair of Governors since 1988. Originally a Parent Governor, David has remained long after his own children left the school, such is his commitment to the development and life chances of young people. This is also exemplified by his immediately becoming a volunteer for Barnado's when he retired from full-time work. Since I joined the school as Head Teacher I have been constantly amazed by his energy, drive and willingness to contribute. His is a dedication and contribution to public service that is rare and in return he seeks only the reward of knowing that our young people are getting the best possible deal. I could not have asked for a more supportive Chair of Governors, always willing to offer advice or act as a sounding board. David's contribution to our school cannot be quantified. I can think of no one better qualified to represent all that is best about the generosity of spirit of the British people than for David to be a Torch Bearer for the 2012 Olympics.
