Daphne's nomination story

Daphne from the Stonehouse Wheelers Cycling Club started cycling when she retired at the age of 60. Now in her 70's, she inspires many to take to the road on two wheels regardless of their age or ability. Cycling many miles a week, Daphne gives up her time to be Secretary of the Stroud Valleys Cycling Club. She leads rides, helps organise an annual Christmas Carol Service and runs a weekly bike ride for local residents. Thanks to Daphne, villagers have gone away together on cycling holidays. As well as cycling, Daphne contributes to community life in lots of other ways. She volunteers in a local charity shop, helps run a village coffee morning, and actively participates in other village activities (computer club, gardening club, table tennis, village hall committee, the Pantomime!). Many people have benefited from Daphne's enthusiasm and generosity. Some are inspired to get back on a bike again; others have started cycling for the first time; all enjoy the wider social events. Carrying the Olympic Torch, she truly deserves her moment to shine.
