Daniel's nomination story

I would like to nominate Daniel Eley for the honour of carrying the Olympic torch when it passes through Guildford in 2012. Daniel had been working with street children in South American for 3 years when he broke his neck diving into a river. Dan's insurance did not cover his repatriation and he was kept in a Columbian hospital until an internet campaign raised sufficient funds to bring him home. Suffering from bedsores that were up to 8cm deep Dan had to undergo intensive rehabilitation and still needs regular medical attention. Despite his injuries Dan remains determined to set up a charity to help disadvantaged youths in Cali, Columbia, by providing them with educational and employment opportunities. He is planning a trip to Columbia later this year and is also an ambassador for Spinal Research. I know that much of his drive to help others comes from a need to focus on problems other than his own. He has openly talked about his frustration and suffers bouts of severe depression. I believe that carrying the Olympic would serve as a boost to Daniel's morale and help him raise awareness for his work.
