Ciaran Kinney is a teacher at Saint Annes Primary School in Corkey , County Antrim. He has a special way of inspiring the children by giving them so many opportunities to try new activities apart from the school curriculum. He takes the kids for many of these activities in his own time. My children have experienced abseiling, rock climbing, canoeing and hill walking where they climb the biggest mountains in County Antrim. Ciaran builds in things like navigation, map reading, first aid, and respect for the environment, so the kids not only try new activities which they may never have thought of doing until later life but they also learn life skills along the way! Beyond school Ciaran is an outdoor instructor. He spends the 2 months of his summer break taking disabled children on outdoor pursuits to help their personal development. He also offers respite care to parents of disabled children and carers of adults also. He is a member of ASMENZIA, a science trust which develops science policy in the UK and a presenter for the Association of Science Education and National Science Learning Centres working to promote the uptake of scientific fields among children. If all that is not enough, he is also a coastguard rescue officer!! He is truly an exceptional man whose actions and dedication make a difference to the lives of both the children he teaches and the disabled children he devotes his own time to each summer, not to mention those who need rescued at weekends!
