Cate's nomination story

Surely no one deserves to be a torchbearer more than Cate: Cate has done the Engadin Ski Marathon, in Switzerland, 7 times, raising money for Hope and Homes for Children, Medecins sans Frontieres, and Oxfam. Then she started marathon running in 2007, at the age of 53, after being accepted for the London marathon first time. She raised £5000 for Medecins sans Frontieres that year, and has since done it in 2008, 2009 and 2011 - raising approx. £12,000 for Oxfam each time (she was their top fund raiser for the 2011 marathon). This year, in the run up to the London Marathon, she cycled to London from Cumbria - a journey of 340 miles - covering up to 80 miles some days. In addition, Cate makes canapes for gallery openings and private parties, and also runs a pop up cafe twice a year, with every penny of the proceeds going to Oxfam. She will be doing the Great North Run in September!
