I take part in Young Enterprise for the South Wales region. This is the second consecutive year I have supported YE as a Business Advisor. Being a Business Advisor for YE involves guiding a group of school children through setting up and running their own business. It's a very rewarding charity to be involved both for the kids and for myself, and last (academic) year I was lucky enough to be awarded the Business Advisor of the Year for Wales.
My role mainly involves attending the team's weekly meetings and providing guidance and support on anything from helping them to identify their target market to reviewing their balance sheet! I try to attend each weekly meeting (usually running for about an hour during lunchtimes), and any event and award days.
This is a scheme that is close to my heart as I took part in it when I was at school. It was a fantastic opportunity for me and the lessons I learnt have stayed with me throughout my academic and now working career. I feel very proud that I can now support the scheme as a business advisor, although it still feels weird that I'm the person doing the advising and not the person being advised. I try to relate back to when I was the one making stress balls out of balloons and flour and help them overcome challenges similar to those that we faced.
