Brian's nomination story

Born in a Scunthorpe council house, only child of a steel shift worker; his first job paid 1s/3p a week. 1948-1985 - Worked for British Steel, becoming Works Manager and GM of BS Cumbria. 1997 - President of the UK Steel association; CBE for contributions to industry & export. After retirement, worked 9 years as Chairman of Cumbria Ambulance Trust. "Unsung" contributions, equally important. Chair - Wreay's millennium project (including a book publication & a permanent village green information centre). Chair - Wreay's village show (10+ years). School governor (4 years). Carer - His mother (dementia) and his mother-in-law (for years after his wife's death). When a stroke recently affected a local gardener, Brian continued to give him accomplishable jobs to instill a sense of self-worth. When his daughter developed an illness nearly claiming her life, Brian played a major role in her recovery and care of her children.
