Bethany's nomination story

Since 1994 Bethany has battled severe mental and physical illness destroying her health, career and first marriage. In 2004 Bethany discovered running and walking. This exercise controlled the illnesses and transformed her life. Starting with the Edinburgh Marathon in 2005 Bethany discovered ultra distance events. In 2008 Bethany made history and became a Manx celebrity by being the only walker to complete the 85 mile Isle Of Man Parish Walk not once, but twice, walking 170 miles non-stop in 47 hours 22 minutes. Raising £5,800 for the Isle Of Man Hyperbaric Chamber she was awarded the `Pride in Mann Local Hero Award`. In 2009 Bethany ran 110 miles in 24 hours, representing the Isle Of Man in the Inaugural Commonwealth Ultradistance Championships in Keswick. In six years she has run over 60 marathons, covered 6,000 miles and raised £15,000 for local charities through unique ultrarunning events on the island. She continues to inspire people with chronic illness to exercise and achieve their dreams. Through her website she shows how exercise, preparation and a positive attitude can change ordinary peoples lives to become extraordinary people.
