Ben's nomination story

As Bens tutor at Grimsby College I met him in September 2010. Ben had undergone brain surgery after he was in a motorbike accident which also killed his father. Although Ben had to learn to walk again and is having to learn to read and write, has only partial sight in one eye he felt the need to progress and achieve once again. Ben has worked harder than any other learner as the theory side of his course can be rather intense, especially when he suffers with long and short term memory loss. Needless to say the motor skills needed to lay bricks are natural to most, yet Ben has also worked through frustration and hardships and can now work to industrial standards. Ben has inspired his entire extremely diverse class to achieve. As a brickwork tutor I have never seen this, and certain I wont again.Written on behalf of Ben Searby as he is partially sighted: I sustained a brain injury not brain surgery. I was in a motorbike accident in September 2007. I suffered a fractured skull, jaw, eye sockets, nose, hand, arm, neck and de-gloved leg.
