Benjamin's nomination story

Ben is currently a Student Nurse at the University of Brighton in Eastbourne. Since moving to Eastbourne for University he has become a volunteer first aider for St. John Ambulance as well as volunteering for South East Coast Ambulance Service too. While Ben was studying for his A-Levels at college each weekend during 2008, 2009 and 2010 Ben volunteered on a ward at St. Peter's Hospital in Surrey. He also volunteered for Surrey vInvolved during this time too. And despite not liking needles he has been a Blood Donor since he turned 17 and has encouraged many others to do the same including myself - and I used to fear needles even more than Ben. Most notably Ben is a passionate supporter and fundraiser of Shooting Star CHASE hospice care for children and teenagers (previously known as CHASE hospice care for children and CHASE children`s hospice service) ever since he was 9 years old when his cousin Matthew died from a brain tumour aged 8 in 2001. Ben has raised in excess of £10,000 and continues to fundraise for the children's charity by helping out at the charity's events, organising and managing his own events, by setting up two youth fundraising groups within his school and college, as well as raising crucial awareness for the charity in his community. Ben is a big fan of London 2012, the Olympic and Paralympic Games and its values! He has the mascots, duvet and posters in his bedroom and I know he would be very proud of being chosen to be part of the historic Torch Relay!
