Benassi's nomination story

In 1988, Dominique's knee was severely damaged as a result of a shooting injury. Following the amputation of his knee, his life took a change for the better rather than for the worse. He decided to take up sport and discovered through preparing for a triathlon, the versatility that he had while he was a fire-fighter. He trained for years without having the right to take part in races with able-bodied individuals. At the Nice triathlon, he made a good start to the race and arrived in a healthy finishing position. An American champion noticed his performance and it is there that the story really begins: he was invited to the United States where he secured his first world title in both disabled and non-disabled triathlon! He happened to meet a fellow amputee Franck Bruno, who set up the "Bout de vie" association that accompanies amputees. Today, Dominique is the associations' treasurer. Together with Franck, Dominique crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a rowing boat.
