Barry has cerebral palsy his speech and co-ordination are affected he also has a visual impairment, he is a wheelchair user and cannot access public transport. He lives with his mother on the outskirts of Bromley which can be quite isolated and this can cause a problem cutting him off from friends and activities in the towns close by. Barry reently tried to participate for Sport for All but was unable to due to transport.
Barry has completed a course to enable him to teach sport and works as a volunteer with young disabled children. Barry also Co Chairs Bromley Exper by Experience panel for the past 2 years. The panel is made up of disabled people and they use their experience to try to influence and improve services. This is a voluntary position and a responsibility that Barry has taken on to try and building a better Bromley for all disabled people. Before this Barry was on Bromley Youth Council, again a voluntary position to improve the lives of young people in Bromley. One of his achievements was to help to lead a bid and win for the borough£35,000 to provide transport for young people with physical disabilities. Unfortunately he had to leave the youth council when he turned 25.
Barry McDonald has proved himself to be an active compaigner in the voluntary sector being a voice for the younger disabled person. He is an active sportsman, despite his disability.
