Barrie's nomination story

Barrie was born with sight and hearing problems which meant be had a difficult time at school but in spite of these adversities he ran a successful business travelling worldwide. He was forced to retire in 2002 due to his failing sight and was registered blind but instead of relaxing, Barrie embarked on helping other blind people and now works extremely hard as an inspiration to them. Barrie started painting, an unusual hobby for a blind person, and does many talks on painting for blind and art groups. His talks, with his positive outlook on life and what can be achieved are an inspiration to them to carry on painting. Barrie also visits schools to talk to young people about blindness and runs art workshops. Barrie is very active in fundraising for Guide Dogs for the Blind and RNIB. Barrie's painting techniques can be found on his website www.lowvisionart.org.
