Ashpal's nomination story

British women's participation in sport is under-represented at all levels from grass roots representation to decision making and will continue to be under- represented for years to come. Ashpal Kaur Bhogal is one the young aspiring British Asian women who have clearly breached these barriers and excelled in their chosen sport have truly become inspirational role models for all. Ashpal Bhogal, who has recently become the first British Sikh/Asian female hockey player to be selected in any of the England Women's Hockey international programmes. Ashpal says she has 'realised a dream' in being selected for the England U16's squad to travel to Holland for the Four Nations tournament next month. Bhogal (15yrs) is a Leeds based schoolgirl and currently a pupil at Boston Spa School, Leeds. She has made it through several months of rigorous assessment to earn her place in the 18-strong party. Ashpal has moved through the England Hockey new single system process and has excelled at every age group. She has won many awards in 2010 and 2011 and works closely with the community in raising the profile of sport in schools, local events and community based projects.
