Arthur Cockcroft

Arthur has devoted over 70 yrs of his life to his passion for athletics. As a competitor, well respected coach, timekeeper and marshall. At 87 he still runs regularly and is thought to be the oldest active member of any sporting club in the city. A founder member of Leeds City Athletic Club he ran a sub 2hr 40 marathon in the 1950s. When his wife died 7 yrs ago of cancer he ran a 5k aged 82 in aid of St Gemma`s Hospice in Leeds. Now aged 87 he is as active as ever. Delivering library books to those housebound in the local area on foot and serving food at a luncheon club at the local church where most of the members are younger than him! Arthur is a fabulous advert for healthy living- making his own soup, bread, biscuits and exercising every day combined with regularly looking after boisterous grandchildren helps to keep him young - physically and mentally! Despite all this he never blows his own trumpet. I`m so proud that he`s my Dad.
