We asked the boys to nominate their chosen candidate as torchbearer. Arran emerged as the one who best represented the Olympic ideals: his peers identified his willingness to help others, his determination to achieve at the highest level particularly on the sporting front (in cricket, hockey and rugby), and the example that he set others. This final point was supported by the Year 7 staff, identifying the 10k charity run which Arran had taken part in to support a Downs Syndrome charity. Everyone who knows Arran considers him to be an exemplary pupil, a good friend and a role model for others. Finally when I interviewed him about the moment to shine, he revealed an ambition to represent his country in sport and I sense that he will work incredibly hard towards that goal. An opportunity like this is something which he will take incredibly seriously and be proud of.
