In 2001, Andrew became blind. Consequently, he was made redundant from his job in a Finance Department. Andrew quickly reasserted himself and began to learn how to adapt to this new situation, embracing the challenge head on, and within a relatively short period of time he had regained his independence. In just two years, Andrew started working with the sight loss charity sight Service. The new role involved working with young people. The aim of the youth group is to encourage young blind people to visit new places and take part in outdoor activities. In this job, Andrew helps fellow blind people to become independent, grow in confidence and ultamately find work after completing their education. Before his blindness, he loved to take part in sports activities. He was determined that blindness wouldn't deter him from sports. Since 2003, Andrew has run the Great North Run and trains with a local Athletics Club. Andrew has been a mentor and inspiration to so many people. Myself and members of the youth group wish to nominate him to thank him for his work.
