Andrew's nomination story

Born with Down's Syndrome and a major heart condition, Andrew underwent two open heart operations before 20 months. He had to relearn to hold up his head after the second operation. Despite this Andrew fought back to become a champion gymnast winning 50 medals including gold and silver at the Special Olympics. Keen to help other people with disabilities enjoy a full and rewarding life Andrew volunteers as a gymnastics coach for young disabled people. He develops their confidence through improved fitness and skills. Active in the local Downs Syndrome group Andrew has promoted gymnastics and helped to start drama sessions. Through Downs Syndrome Scotland he gives talks about his life, his hopes and aspirations, dispelling myths about Downs Syndrome. Andrew attends a Capability Scotland centre which is under threat of closure. He presented a 1500 signature petition to the council and gave a talk opposing this. He was told that his talk impressed them so much they decided to grant a stay of execution. His dignity and passion carried great weight. Andrew would be a proud and inspirational torch bearer; an embodiment of the true spirit of the Olympics.
