Andy's nomination story

Andrew Banks is an inspiration to everyone. He was diagnosed with Downs Syndrome at birth but this has not stopped him achieving. He has been selected to swim for GBR for Downs Syndrome International Swimming Organisation whose motto is `Ability not disability`. This is the highest level that a Downs swimmer can achieve and allows them to compete at International level. He has been swimming in the Downs World Championships in both Portugal and Taiwan. He has gained the Gold Duke of Edinburgh award presented at Windsor Castle and in addition completed his Queens Scout award. This being the highest award possible within the Scouting movement. He has competed in both the 2005 and 2009 Special Olympics games. During Downs Syndrome awareness week the Leicester Mercury wrote a major article about Andy and his achievements regarding raising awareness of Downs Syndrome. Andy has been involved heavily in fundraising and has raised thousands of pounds for various charities by participating in many swimarathons, cycling events and through walking. Andy has touched the hearts of many along his varied and interesting journey and truly is an inspiration to the whole community.
