Amanda's nomination story

Since setting up the Marine Conservation Society Volunteers (Carrickfergus, Larne and Newtownabbey) group 18 months ago, Amanda has organised around 16 beach cleans in her local area, attended by people from the local community of all ages and several businesses including Carrickfergus Borough Council and Ulster Bank Limited. She has given presentations about the impacts of marine litter to youth groups, written articles for local newspapers and her university magazine and discussed marine litter on the 7.30 Show, a television programme in Northern Ireland, and on 'Good Morning Ulster' on BBC Radio Ulster. She is extremely enthusiastic about the marine environment and, through her genuine personality, she has inspired others to do their bit for our community. Amanda would really appreciate the honour of carrying the Olympic Torch and I believe she is highly deserving, being only 21 and having already reached out to so many in her community!
