Betty's nomination story

Alice contracted polio while at P.E. College. Returned after one year and retrained as a general teacher becoming deputy head teacher. In 1981 started a swimming club for disabled people encouraging them to have a go, she has entered the hour postal swim every year and swims a mile using arms only, has fourteen gold medals, she is sponsered in these swims raising money to help run this club and other. She started a social club for disabled people. Every week helps at her handwork club for disabled people, selling the handwork to help run the club. She sails as a disabled crew member on the Tall Ship Tenacious going up the mast in her wheelchair.She gives talks to groups about her experiences for a donation to charities for disabled. She helps to arrange holiday each year for disabled people and raises money to help pay for a carer by her handwork. She also made a disc and poetry book.
