Selection as a Torch bearer is an honour and a personal highpoint.. Born the son of a miner, and brought up in a Scottish mining village, I have been driven by fairness and the wish to add value. I spent over 50 years in employment in a wide variety of jobs in the public and private sectors, and my efforts have been recognised with the award of a CBE. Sport, both amateur and professional, has played a major part in my life.. In my retirement, I have written a book, the proceeds of which will go to the PACE Centre, a charity for children with disabilities. Our grandson has cerebral palsy, and is benefiting greatly from the skill, dedication, and warmth this charity brings to his education, and that of all children in their charge.. The Olympic flame embodies the lasting values of the Olympic movement, where nations compete in peace. It serves as a beacon of encouragement to us all, whatever our abilities, to be all that we can be.`
