Alex's nomination story

I expect that when the list of 8000 names is drawn up, there will be a number that have represented their country in sport, maybe in the Olympics and Paralympics. But what about the Special Olympics? Alex began playing tennis with a group that has learning difficulties when he was still at school. Since then, he has competed in a number of tournaments, including representing the East Midlands in the Special Olympics National Games in Leicester in 2009, where he won two gold and a silver. He will be travelling to Athens in June 2011 to represent Britain in the Special Olympics World Games. He enjoys running with a local club a couple of times a week, and completed his first half marathon last autumn. Special Olympics helps youngsters who struggle with the ordinary to achieve the extraordinary. It would be appropriate if they were represented to raise awareness of this organisation.
