Alec Collyer has for over 35 years been a founding member and is still very much an active member of Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Ashburton. Over that time he has taken part in scores of rescues and searches. As far back as 1978 he set off into the Moor on skis in search of a missing walker, who had been stranded in appalling weather. Since then Alec has been out on many other rescues, including recently recovering two lost canoeists out of the very steep River Dart valley. For many years the Police force in Devon and Cornwall have had neither the manpower nor local knowledge to undertake searches and rescues on the 365 square miles of Dartmoor National Park. Alec Collyer is a member of one of the four voluntary teams who go out day and night 24/7/365 to assist persons in distress when required by the Police.
