This week the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) begins a public consultation process to seek the views of Weymouth and Portland residents in advance of submitting planning applications to Weymouth and Portland Borough Council later this year.
The existing layout and world class facilities of both the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) and Portland Marina will be used as the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Sailing venue. A planning application, expected to be submitted in October 2010, will specify the temporary facilities such as portacabins, marquees, tents and cabling, known as venue overlay, required to stage the sailing competition.
Further planning applications, expected to be submitted in December 2010, will be for the temporary use of the ZeroC housing development as the athlete’s accommodation for the London 2012 Sailing events and the additional temporary facilities necessary to cater for more than 500 competitors and officials.
James Bulley, LOCOG Director of Venues and Infrastructure said: ‘The temporary overlay plans we have developed with two years to go until the start of the London 2012 Games will enable 460 sailors to be at their best for the competition for 10 Olympic and three Paralympic gold medals.
‘The athletes will be competing on some of the best sailing waters in Northern Europe, set against one of the UK’s most stunning coastlines. Their endeavours will help showcase Weymouth and Portland to millions of people around the world.’
The sailors and their support teams will be accommodated in the 77 units of the ZeroC housing development. In addition to making use of the accommodation, temporary facilities will also be required to house Games-time amenities such as catering, storage and support services. The preferred site for locating these additional temporary facilities is within the shell of the new Chesil Cove Primary School to be developed by Dorset County Council, adjacent to Officers Field.
Before submitting the planning applications to the Borough Council, London 2012 will share plans for the Sailing events with local residents and stakeholders. Plans can be viewed and commented on at the following locations:
- The Boat That Rocks, Portland Marina, Osprey Quay on Thursday 29 July 2010 from 4pm to 8pm and Friday 30 July 2010 from 12 noon to 4pm
- The Pavilion Theatre, Weymouth on Saturday 31 July 2010 from 11am to 3pm
Plans will also be available to view online from midday Thursday 29 JulyThe plans show the five Olympic Sailing competition areas and the two Paralympic Sailing competition areas.
The Portland Harbour Authority, Weymouth Harbour Authority, the London 2012 Organising Committee, Dorset Police and the MCA are working together to ensure the Olympic and Paralympic Games Sailing competition offers fair racing and a safe and secure competition environment. The proposed plan to manage the waters at Games-time will also be available to view at the exhibitions.
