London 2012 launches Get Set network as new education logo infill is unveiled

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has today (September 15) unveiled the winning design from a national competition to create an infill for the London 2012 Olympic logo for exclusive use by UK schools and colleges.
The new education logo infill was designed by Reiss Evans (18) from Dover, a graphic design student at Canterbury College. Reiss saw off competition from more than 150 young designers across the UK, aged between 16 and 21 years-old. His winning infill creates a logo which will be awarded to schools and colleges across the country which join the Get Set network - part of the official London 2012 education programme - by demonstrating a commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

Reiss Evans, competition winner said; “I wanted to create a design for everyone and one that was relevant to every school or college joining the Get Set network. I chose a pencil design because students use pencils from a young age at primary schools through to their work at college.

“The pencils are symbolic of the creativity in the UK’s schools and the range of colours used represents the global nature of the 2012 Games. The colours ensure the logo is eye-catching and they tie in with those used in London 2012’s own brand work.”

The new education logo was revealed today (September 15) at Nightingale Primary School in Woolwich, London: the first school to be awarded the logo for joining the Get Set network and have its participation in the London 2012’s education programme formally recognised. Reiss Evans was joined at the launch by Jonathan Edwards, Olympic Triple Jump gold medalist and LOCOG Board Member and Tessa Jowell, Olympics Minister and Councillor Chris Roberts, Leader of Greenwich Council.

With more than 11,000 schools and colleges across the UK already registered as using the Get Set resources - or taking part in the initiatives promoted through the eight key themes of Get Set, London 2012 is helping to spark young people’s imagination and enthusiasm for learning in many ways. London 2012 today invites schools and colleges to go one step further, join the Get Set network and have their work recognised with the new London 2012 education logo.

Jonathan Edwards, LOCOG Board Member said; “When London won the right to host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, we made a clear promise to use the power of the 2012 Games to inspire young people.

“By awarding the new education logo to schools and colleges which successfully join the Get Set network, London 2012 is able to recognise and reward places of learning where inspiring work around the Olympic Values of friendship, excellence and respect and the Paralympic Values of inspiration, courage, determination and equality is taking place.”

Tessa Jowell, Minister for the Olympics said: “Up and down the country London 2012 has already captured the imagination of millions of young people, not least Reiss Evans, the talented young designer who has created the London 2012 education logo infill. Reiss's clever design will be instantly recognisable in schools and colleges across the UK where the Olympic and Paralympic spirit and values are being brought to life through the Get Set programme.”

To earn the right to use the new education logo, and become a member of the new Get Set network, schools and colleges need to register with Get Set, showcase their student-led work around the Values via the dedicated ‘Get Set’ blog, and complete a short application form. They will receive the right to use the London 2012 education logo on their headed paper, website and school sign, as well as being given a plaque and certificate marking their achievements. Members of the Get Set network will also receive access to exclusive competitions and 2012 Games related opportunities over the next three years.

Iain Wright, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, DCSF said; “I urge pupils and teachers to go one step further and join the17 founding member schools and colleges who have already successfully applied to be part of the Get Set network. We look forward to working with London 2012 to award each institution the London 2012 education logo over the coming term.”

  • Willand School, Cullompton, Devon
  • Wright Robinson Sports College, Manchester
  • Toll Bar Business and Enterprise College, N.E. Lincolnshire
  • Canterbury College, Kent (where Reiss Evans the design competition winner studies)

As part of his prize, Reiss Evans has recently completed a two-month internship at FutureBrand, the global branding firm and part of the McCann Worldgroup where he developed his concept and helped design the plaques and certificates that will be issued to schools which join successfully join the Get Set network.

Councillor Chris Roberts, Leader of Greenwich Council, said: “Many congratulations to Nightingale Primary School, the first school in the country to achieve the Get Set status for their excellent work embracing and promoting the Olympic and Paralympic values. Children at Nightingale School will be aware that they are just a stone’s throw away from the site of the Olympic shooting events at the Royal Artillery Barracks. It is this closeness to such iconic Olympic events which helps inspire our children and young people to engage with the 2012 Games and reap the many benefits of a true Olympic legacy. Greenwich is proud of its host borough status, and we believe that the events being held at Woolwich and Greenwich we be among the best at London 2012.”

The education logo will be second official London 2012 logo infill. The first, the Beijing/London Handover logo, was created in the summer of 2008 and featured the Union flag.

A range of free, flexible resources with the Paralympic and Olympic Values at their heart. Resources available on the site are for 3-19 year olds and include inspirational films, interactive games, fact sheets, news articles and more, along with an Educators section for practitioners and senior management.
A host of new resources will be launched in the Autumn 2009 term in areas including numeracy for primary schools, Personal Health and Social Education, enterprise, science, technology, engineering and maths.
The opportunity to ‘Go Further’ and get involved in initiatives supported by London 2012 partners in eight key themes - internationalism; communication, collaboration and citizenship; practical learning; PE and sport; enterprise; sustainability and regeneration; culture and creativity, and healthy, active lifestyles. Examples of initiatives include the Lloyds TSB National School Sports Week (sport), EDF Energy’s The Pod (sustainability) and the Make Your Mark challenge (enterprise)
